Television and Radio Fees Now or Does the Duty to Pay Fees Apply to Your Company?
We would like to inform you about some changes to television and radio fees. These changes impact, among others, a number of business companies. The amendment to Act No. 348/2005 Coll., on radio and television fees, came into effect on 1 May 2025.
Change to Amount of Fees
After several years of no rises, both fees have been increased. The monthly amount of the radio fee is now CZK 55 and the TV fee is CZK 150. For individuals not doing business, the principle of paying only once per household, without regard to the number of members or properties owned, remains. Other changes, however, have a greater significance for payments, in particular by business companies.
New Definition of Receiver—Any Reception
The amendment expanded the definition of a radio and television receiver. Any device technically capable of reproducing radio and/or television broadcasts on an individually selectable basis, without regard to the means of reception, is now considered a receiver. Therefore, not only a standard device with the relevant tuner, but also any device with Internet access that is able to play Czech Television and Czech Radio broadcasts will be considered to be a receiver. This means that basically any smartphone, computer or tablet will now be considered a receiver. Ownership, possession or other use of a receiver means that such a person becomes a payer.
Payment of Fees by Number of Employees—No Payment Up to 24 Employees
The most important news for legal entities and natural persons doing business is that the amount of the fee will no longer be linked to the number of receivers. This is because it will now be derived from the number of employees.
Legal entities and natural persons doing business that employ no more than 24 persons do not pay the new radio and television fee. For payers with 25 or more employees, the amount of the fees will be graduated as follows:
Number of employees | Multiple of set monthly fee | Monthly amount of radio fee (in CZK) | Monthly amount of television fee (in CZK) |
---|---|---|---|
25—49 | 5 | 275 | 750 |
50—99 | 10 | 550 | 1500 |
100—199 | 20 | 1100 | 3000 |
200—249 | 30 | 1650 | 4500 |
250—499 | 70 | 3850 | 10500 |
500 and over | 100 | 5500 | 15000 |
The number of employees here means the number of employees converted into full-time equivalents. According to current interpretations, employees with agreements for work done outside an employment relationship (agreements on performance of work and agreements on work activity) are not included in this number.
The act continues to provide for some exemptions from paying fees (e.g. for associations or employers where more than 50% of the employees are persons with disabilities) and regulates some specific situations (e.g. fees for renting means of transport).
